Phew, finally got my desktop back up and running again so I can work on full scale pictures. It was time to try and push the envelope some more! A very good IRL friend of mine commented that he thought Not One Step Backwards wasn't gory enough for a depiction of the aftermath of a medieval battle, especially given Kyrophon's capacity to use his entire body as a weapon. I was inclined to agree although at the same time as much as I enjoy painting blood, I didn't have any interest in drawing a bunch of soldiers that had been pulverised the closed-casket-funeral way losing a fight with Kyro would do. I decided to draw Kyrophon after the battle was over, being attended to by the medics and squires. It was a good chance for me to really show the scale involved. Getting Kyro in and out of his armour is less like helping a soldier and more like servicing a tank.

I've always been bad with highlights, I'm never bold enough with them. I put my brush on like 3% opacity and squeak back and forward rather than just picking a tone and splashing it on 20%. I thought I'd try some really hard directional lighting to try and force myself to address this failing. It kinda worked, I did still end up doing my normal low-opacity fluffing, but I think the end result is good.
