“Oleander! Nnaku! Quail! Welcome students,” the instructor says with a smile on his face. “I am Professor Naoki Kinjo, and it is very nice to meet you. In order to be an alchemist, there are many skills you must master. The Alchemy Workshop isn't as focused around the particulars of the art, and instead gives you a taste of all the fun things we can do with potions!”

[GMAGS 1-WSA] - Alchemy Workshop

With a playful wink, he scoops up a vial of some luminescent blue fluid and dumps it into beaker of a thick, red solution. In an instant, the mixture bubbles up out of the container, bursting into flames. “Now as you can see here,” Naoki says calmly, “I seem to have combined some enhanced pyran tree oil with alaela extract and set fire to my desk.” Naoki lets the fire spread for a few seconds before glancing over at a small doll-like being standing motionless a few feet away. "Saiora, if you would be so kind," the Instructor says softly. The mechanical maid, a smaller version of the automatons that routinely clean the campus, springs to life. She sets to work on mixing another concoction using some powders and liquids from a nearby container. She pours out the solution across the desk, extinguishing the flames and sending a wisp of smoke into the air.

“Ah, thank you Saiora," the instructor says with a smile. "As many times as I've performed this experiment, I am excited to see that I still have a desk left! Now please do not worry, class, I will not be setting anything else alight today. However, I do this to teach all of you a valuable lesson. An alchemist must learn a great deal to become proficient with crafting potions and the like. It also takes much practice to learn which things not to combine, lest one sets fire to one’s desk. But I will argue that even more importantly, you should always be prepared for when things inevitably go wrong. Everyone makes mistakes, and while you will eventually be learning enough not to make these mistakes in the future, always have a backup plan!”

The professor makes his way around the classroom, distributing two small wooden boxes to each student’s desk. He returns to his own desk, the smoke cleared and the surface now a charred black. The maid automaton mixes another solution and empties it along the top of the table. The look and smell of the burnt wood fades, replaced with a minty fresh scent and clean appearance. “Wonderful, Saiora! The headmistress will hardly know! Now class, if you will open your boxes, you will find before you an assignment. You will be working on your practical knowledge of dispelling or dismantling various alchemical creations.”

He removes the lids of his own boxes, holding them up to display to the class. “This box on your left contains the vials of liquid ingredients for some simple concoctions you can whip up. You will also note that the fluids have each been dyed one of three colors: red is pyran tree oil, blue is bladeweed and yellow is southern juniper. Please use the beakers and stirrers at your desks to experiment with various combinations. The ingredients already have some aether liquid blended in and require minimal preparation. Just put them together and stir!”

Naoki demonstrates by setting the boxes down and pouring vials of red and yellow into a glass beaker at his desk. The mixture turns orange and begins frothing over with foam, expanding to the top of the container. “With our experiment here, orange will foam up, and if I’m not careful it may require a towel to clean up. To counteract this, I am going to apply an alchemical solvent.” Saiora hands him a dropper from the second container filled with a red solution. “In your other box, you will find droppers of solvents that are similarly color-coded with the three primary colors. Each secondary color reaction will require a solvent of one of its primary colors to stop the reaction. However…” The instructor squeezes a few drops of red into the foam, which seems to only agitate the solution more. “…only one primary color is the correct choice. So then if not red, I will use yellow.” He adds some yellow solvent to the reaction, the foam immediately subsiding.

“Your assignment here is a simple but important one. I want you to create one of each type of reaction: orange will foam, purple will smoke and green will harden into a stone-like substance. Use the correct solvent to break apart the reaction and render the solution inert. Only one primary color of solvent is the proper choice for disrupting the reaction. You will also find pen and paper in your solvent box, and you are to use this to denote which color of solvent corresponds to which alchemical component. Nightberry stops foam, summerneedle stops smoke and bellthorn reverts hardening. Please take note that each of you have a different coloring for solvents, so it is possible that your nightberry may be a different color than your neighbor’s!” As he concludes his lecture, he and the small maid automaton set to work on cleaning up the mess at his desk.

Alchemy Workshop Assignment -

-  Your student must create one of each type of reaction using chemicals: foaming (orange), smoking (purple) and hardening (green). Then, using a solvent colored the same as one of the solution’s primary colors, stop the reaction. Your student should note which solvent breaks apart which reaction and what each solvent is (nightberry, summerneedle or bellthorn).

- You can work alone or collaborate with a classmate. If collaborating, only one set of ingredients and solvents need be used. (RP submission must be between at least two people)

- If you have questions, please feel free to ask either in character or OOC.
- All written works have to have word counts included, otherwise the grade received will be affected negatively.
- Your assignment must be handed in by the 31st of June 2018 by submitting it to the appropriate group folder. Please comment on this journal, linking your assignment once you have submitted it to the group.

"Congratulations on our previous expedition, Shade!" the instructor says with enthusiasm. "I'm so glad to see you alchemy once more. I think you'll find that there are some fun lessons in store with Basic Potions!" He begins scrawling letters across the blackboard, spelling out the title for the day's lesson.

[GMAGS 2-BP] Basic Potions - Class 1

"This term, we'll be getting into more of the particulars on brewing potions. In our Workshop, as you will recall, we covered only the basics of mixing components and making use of them. Today we will study how to prepare these ingredients in the first place!"

A small maid automaton pulls herself up onto the desk and opens a large, wooden chest. Inside are rows of beakers filled with fluids, crushed leaves and powders. "Thank you, Saiora," the instructor says with a nod toward the maid. "Previously, we worked with materials more akin to what you see here: ingredients pre-processed and ready for use! We won't be starting with any of this today." As he completed his sentence, the Saiora slammed shut the chest, obviously well-rehearsed beforehand. "No shortcuts this time! Let's do some gardening!"

Instructor Kinjo exits from behind his desk, proceeding to one side of the alchemy lab. Windows line the wall, light streaming in to provide nourishment for a multitude of potted plants. "We have here a decent selection of nature for our experimentation. I spy some very nice specimens here, as well as some rather mediocre varieties."

"I would like you to collect some of the berries from the Frostberry and grass from the Broadleaf, and pay close attention to their qualities. The vitality of the plant will affect the potency of the potion you brew! Then comes the preparation."
Naoki demonstrates how to process the ingredients, grinding the berries and grass with a mortar and pestle before pouring the pasty mix into a glass vial. "Lastly, add in your catalyst. For this, we will be using Aether Liquid. This will help to boost the power of our herbal ingredients." He adds a vial of a clear, watery liquid to the concoction before stirring it.

"And there we have it! Our own Coldvision Potion! Once you drink this, you will see the world in shades of blue, violet and green, though it can be a little odd at first. The more potent your mixture, the more intense the colors, allowing you to see finer details. The magic of this potion will change the way you perceive your surroundings, seeing different colors for different temperatures. Blue being the coldest, green being the warmest, purple somewhere in between. I'd like you to make a few potions, at least three, and try out different qualities of specimens. I want you to experience first-hand how this can impact your alchemy!"

-Alchemy Assignment-
- Your student must brew at least three Coldvision Potions using Frostberry, Broadleaf Bluegrass and Aether Liquid. Then, they should drink the potion to experience its effects.
- Once consumed, a Coldvision Potion allows the user to see their surroundings in different colors based on the objects' temperatures. It's a bit like a thermal imaging camera, though only in shades of blue, violet and green.
- While thermal vision may provide greater detail for warmer objects, a Coldvision Potion is more sensitive to the cold!
