[Horoscope Trial] The Star SeekerThe cetus walked with his head bowed before the dry winds of the Phenodian desert, breath rattling in his throat as much from fatigue than physical strain. The cool black ink that would so often coat his throat and drip from nostril and maw was another tally; a deeply grooved strike against his survival on the treacherous sandy wastes that would surely spell his demise should a sandstorm decide to strike.
When he would typically carry his head high, his walk self-assured in that way only the confidence of triumph could bring, he now struggled to make his body as compact as possible; as if reducing the surface area of his elongated form would make the bitter winds take pity on his much-battered skin. Not that it was a doomed quest; no, never that. Tobias still retained an air of self-assurance even when his hooves sunk six inches deep into the sand and the little grains picked up by the relentless currents stung at his eyes. However, even
[Horoscope Trial] The ObserverThe locals proved more generous with their water than originally anticipated. Perhaps it was a tradition he was unaware of, but, with a few pointed inquiries, he was gifted, by word of mouth, with a mental map of the direction he must take. Movement was eager as he approached what was sure to be his reward for such deep-seated troubles, and his joy soared when his his little distraction was met with results. He was eager in scrubbing away the grit from his skin, gulping deep from the well until his throat was cool and his mouth collected the slippery familiar ink, free of sand at last. Any additional gifts would be the icing of the cake, for what could be sweeter than the stilling of a parched throat?
The Observatory itself proved an easy find - perhaps the most expansive building in all of Lixor, with smooth white-washed walls of an almost deceptive simplicity. Deceptive, for when drawing closer all the intricacies flashed to the e
[Horoscope Trial] Consult Mephesto“Ah, I see you found them,” despite the brief explanation offered by Tobias, Mephesto seemed familiar enough not to need much elaboration. He smiled, turning to face him, two books clutched between his arms. “They’re a valuable find, a precious find.”
The cetus tossed his head, impatient. It had taken a long time to find the ophiuchus between the ceiling-tall wooden bookshelves, longer than he had expected, at the least. When he did find him, the older caster had his nose buried in his books, attention fixated on the words so that Tobias was to wait, swollen feet constantly moving and shifting in an effort to ease the twinges of pain. “Oh?” he prompted.
“They contain magicks and charts, maps and guides to help you hone your skill,” he gave a pause, eyes squinting at the cetus before him. When he spoke again his words were slow and deliberate, as if picking them out from the covers of the books bef
[Immigration Trial] Greeting the QueenPeagarden had its charm; as hectic as it was. Life here ran at a perpetual headlong sprint, tireless because of the thousand of skittering bagbeans that powered its engine. One wrong step, and his hooves would surely square upon one of the milling critters that crowded every cobbled street and dirt path of the city. So he picked his way through cautiously, looking down at his hooves when the streets became denser, thicker with the flow of the miniscule traffic.
They were not unlike perfaunts in size, was what he found most curious. Some, even taller still. Not that he had neglected to see a bagbean before, but for reasons he could now not name he didn’t expect there to be so many. Perfaunts had been diminished, until only the few pearls the princess had managed to bring back remained, and although growing, they were spread few and far between compared to this. But bagbeans had
[Immigration Trial] Bartering with FabianHe was an odd little bean; dull of colour, but strapped chock-full of a hue of rainbows; an endless treasury of all manner of potion, crystal, glass, or jewel, so that the lasting effect he had was that of the overwhelmed eye. Sight jumped from marvel to oddity without taking in the detail of the designs, and although he looked up at him, patient as can be, Tobias found himself struggling to say but a word to the creature that stood before him, lest he cause mortal offense and he be victim of one of the vials that clung loosely about the bagbean in a colorful display of wealth or madness.
“Well?” Fabian prompted, blinking slow sleepy eyes up at the caster.
“Ah,” more an exhale of breath than an acknowledgement. Tobias stood his ground beneath the bagbean’s scrutiny, breath rattling with the goblets of ink that coated his throat. “Near the Blanchness.”
[Immigration Trial] For Science!“The potency of the plant’s leaves varies when mixed in a tea, but I have yet to discover whether it’s a dose-dependent reaction, or dependent on other factors that we will dub as ‘yet to be determined’. Thus, the purpose of this experiment will be to… hey. Hey!”
There was a loud hacking noise - a creature struggling to breathe under a mixture of viscous fluid and spittle. A gargle, then the unmistakable sound of gagging - strong gasps for breath shortly followed by the spitting. Multiple times. Directly into the only trashcan in the room.
“Don’t do that,” the bagbean scolded, nose wrinkling in disgust.
The caster ignored the peevishness of the voice, bending double over the trashcan arms extended to grasp the flat rectangular lab desk for support. Thick black globules dribbled in rivulets from his maw
[Immigration Trial] Not Another Side Quest“Ya casters are smart, yeah?” the voice had been full of confidence. A question that held the conviction of a fact more than an inquiry. A show of how much knowledge fit into that miniscule head of his rather than the absence of it. A rumor or stereotype or threat passed down from generation to generation until it was an unshakable belief, almost like faith, in what the casters as a species could do and represent, and whatever deviant dared not commit under the thought was an aberration. A data point three miles from the curve, ruining the whole set.
Tobias bit his tongue not for a desire to keep silent, but from a desire not to engage further. Instead he waited impassively as the bagbean spoke, eyes narrowed, tail flicking in telltale signs of irritation. Oblivious, Quest had continued on, words moving too fast for his mouth to form them properly, slurring and twanging in a slack-jawed rhythm that could have almost been called charming i
[Immigration Trial] Wordly Green ThumbIt was a thought that he would have considered impossible prior to meeting the green-hued bagbean and her kindly smiles, but the more she spoke, the more his certainty grew - his interest in agriculture dropped further until it was lost to the abyss, surely never to be found again. For the little bagbean called Agnes, although incredibly passionate for her gift and craft, failed to instill that passion on the cetus for she lacked the vocation of speech; or at least of its charming eloquence. She swayed, back in forth, in a pantomime of what might have been an elaborate show of strength and certainty, but when she opened her mouth all that bounced against his ears felt like the equivalent of pottery shattering, the slow dribble of molasses, or the joy of watching grass grow.
“The hand trowel is the most well-known of the tools here - with the point, we can bury it deep enough in the earth to carve a small hole, and by tilting it just so - do you
[Immigration Trial] Bad Beans, Bad BeansThe first thing he noticed as he opened his eyes were the black dots that swam with every little tilt and sway of his head. Dazed, he blinked, until the worst of them seemed to fade, to be replaced instead by a blurriness that was no more appealing than its predecessor. He squinted, snorting out goblets of ink that had clung to the walls of his nostrils, and watched the blurry blackness leak free in the most delightful of ways. Another snort, a sneeze, then his nose cleared, and with that, so did the use of his eyes. The world beyond him became clearer, which seemed to him far more unfortunate than the inability to see once he took notice of what surrounded him.
He was in a room, of that he was sure. An elongated room, built like a rectangle with a low vaulted ceiling so that if he were to rise up to his full height, his horn would have brushed against it. It was not the room itself that held his eye, but rather, what was held

Taciturn to a fault, Tobias' silence can fool the unwary to believe his reserved nature expresses a cool temper, which couldn't be father from the truth. He's hot-headed and vindictive, holding his tongue more for an unwillingness to betray a sense of trust or inspire friendship than an absence of words.
