The only exception is our "WBS Weekly VRH Ranch Cow Work" class and our "WBS Weekly Working Ranch Horse" class, in which some competitors (see classes below for more info) may rope a cow during their run, but in our classes, their time ends once the rope has caught the cow - the cow is not ever to be taken to the ground purposefully. We encourage slow stops over harsh stops, and will penalize competitors conducting harsh stops on our cattle that could injure them. In this class the time stops as soon as the rope lands securely on the cow (could be their neck or a leg), so there is no reward for stopping the cows movement. After the rope lands securely on the cow and your time has stopped, we highly encourage responsibly slowing after securing the cow to retrieve your rope (WBS staff will be nearby to assist you in the retrieval either way). Entries showing take downs of our cattle will be disqualified.

"Obstacles found in a ranch trail pattern are approximate to those found during the course of everyday work. Judges are looking for a well-trained, responsive and well-mannered horse that can correctly navigate and negotiate the course, and to do so in a correct and efficient manner." - AQHA
Watch THIS for inspiration. The horse will go over a small jump made of chopped wood limbs, sided by potted plants. The horse will walk, trot, and/or canter over obstacles (natural logs) that are placed on the ground, as well as side pass over them, and navigate mazes and weave through potted plants. The horse will drag an obstacle (rope is provided at the obstacle, and should be dropped off at end of drag site). The rider will open the door to a cattle pen with cattle inside, enter the pen, and exit at the opposite side of the pen all while mounted. The horse should stand still as the rider dismounts, walks away to pretend brand a cow, then returns to lead the horse away.
The following obstacles are PROHIBITED, and may NOT be used: Tarps, water obstacles, PVC pipe used as a jump or walk over, tires, rocking or moving bridges, painted logs or poles, and logs must be on the floor, not elevated.

WBS Weekly Ranch Trail
Video Example"Obstacles found in a ranch trail pattern are approximate to those found during the course of everyday work.

WBS Weekly Trail Trials (5 miles)
"Riders are judged on their skills and abilities to guide their horses through a natural obstacle course ... with approximately 10-12 judged natural obstacles that appear along a trail of several miles. The rides consist of obstacles and situations people might encounter on a trail ride. A course is designed using the natural obstacles that already exist on a particular trail such as walking over logs, opening a gate, or maneuvering through a creek. This is not a timed event, but casual in nature. Riders may be given a time limit to ride through a particular obstacle so that riders behind them don’t get held back. Riders may ride as individuals or groups. Riders are judged individually and strictly on how well they negotiated their horse through an obstacle with an emphasis on calmness and safety." - TrailTrials.comWBS Outdoor Trails

WBS Weekly VRH Ranch Cow Work
"The horse must demonstrate its natural ability to work a cow in a specified pattern that varies depending on division. Exhibitors in the open, amateur, cowboy and youth divisions are given three minutes to box the cow, turn it both directions on the fence and then rope it. Amateurs and youth are allowed to circle the cow both directions in lieu of roping. Limited-division riders will be asked to box the cow, drive it down the fence, box the cow at the other end of the arena and then drive the cow back up the fence to complete their pattern." - AQHA*Please note that some competitors (see info above) may rope a cow during their run, but in our class their time ends once the rope has caught the cow - the cow is not ever to be taken to the ground purposefully. Entries showing take downs of our cattle will be disqualified.*

WBS Weekly Working Western Rail
"The working western rail class measures the ability of the horse to be a pleasure to ride and should reflect the versatility, attitude, and movement of a working horse. The horse should be well-broke, relaxed, quiet, soft and cadenced at all gaits. The movement of the working western rail horse should simulate a horse needing to cover long distances, softly and quietly. The overall manners and responsiveness of the horse and the horse’s quality of movement are the primary considerations. Maximum credit should be given to the horse that has a natural flowing stride and consistent, ground covering gaits. Transitions should be performed when requested, with smoothness and responsiveness. The ideal working western rail horse should have a natural head carriage at each gait. The horse should be ridden on a relatively loose rein with light contact and without requiring undue restraint while being responsive to the rider and making timely transitions in a smooth and correct manner. The horse should be soft in the bridle, yield to contact and shall not be shown on a full drape of rein. Riders are encouraged to use adequate space given the extension of gaits required. This class should show the horse’s ability to work at a forward, working pace while under control by the rider. The horse shall be balanced and appear willing and a pleasure to ride in a group situation." - AQHAIndoor Arena - All competitors show together at the same time (competing stallions must have a red + white + blue tail ribbon displayed or a stallion disc displayed on their bridle).
