A land out of time or perhaps nearly lost to it? Mesozoika aims to be a community driven RPG group based around packs and various herds of dinosaurs living in 'The Meso'. With multiple different territories, regions and biomes it provides a very diverse world for your characters to traverse and explore.

This is a Free to Join group with no activity requirements.

Stories take place in The Meso in the form of art and literature submitted by our members! There are a plethora of dinosaurs open for character creation. These roleplay characters are like actors in a movie who players write for from their perspective, normally in the third person.

Mesozoika Skills

Besides being an RP driven group, Mesozoika also employs the use of a stat system. Characters are all given stats initially based on their species and build that help define their strengths and weaknesses. These stats can be improved upon throughout the life of that character through story and, of course, roleplay!

Skills are broken down into two distinct groups: Physical skills and Learned Skills

Physical Skills:
- Speed
- Stamina
- Strength

Learned Skills:
- Crafting
- Stealth
- Herbalism

Seasons and Aging

The lands of Mesozoika are not immune to the sands of time and neither are our beloved characters! To insure a unified aging processes and provide a chronological order to events there are fixed years and seasons within the game world that correlates to Real Life time. Each season (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) takes one real life month. This allows one full in game year to pass every four real life months!

The current In Game year and season will always be posted on the groups homepage for convenience.

History

There is a single defining moment that every creature in The Meso knows of and often references. It is considered to be the beginning of their lives in The Meso and the event that marked the death of the Old World. The Great Calamity was a massive, horrifying event that, ironically, no one really knows the details of. Each herd and pack has their own version of what happened but the general consensus is that it was a violent, unnatural event in which many of their kind perished.

The times that followed were rough, many of their ancestors still clinging to their savage, primitive ways as they all battled with one another to survive. As the world healed and time continued to pass by, many of the Great Hunters found that living and working together gave them the best shot at survival. Understanding that their success also depended on that of their prey many moved to the outer edges of The Meso and formed massive territories.

To the west went the Dromaeosaurs or 'Feathered Claws' as they are known to most outside their own pack. Secretive and silent they took to the high mountains which kept their larger competitors out of their hunting grounds and allowed their society to flourish. However infighting has always been a great plague on this pack of multiple species which still exists to this day.

To the east lumbered the great Tyrants who soon built a great monarchy through which they controlled their lands. Proud and arrogant they still believe themselves the top of the food chain and enjoy reminding other 'lower species' of that fact (namely Carnos). However as they are finding out, division by rank does not provide stable unity. The crown struggles to maintain control over the vast territory thanks to seeds of infidelity sown by past rulers.

To the southwest lies possibly the largest claimed territory. Ruled by the horned Carnotaurs, these hunters are by no means the largest in the land but they are some of the most fierce. With a large population divided into five clans they maintain control over a large region of The Meso stretching from the southern edge of the Dromaeosaur plateau to the northern desert. Naturally aggressive and lovers of battle these dinosaurs are also wildly superstitious and religious.

With so many hunters moving outwards and away from the Heart of The Meso, many herbivores moved in. Lush with jungle and spotted with valleys and rivers The Heart is a place of life and rebirth. Sauropods live in peace here with many other leaf eaters though these giants are not free from threats. Rogue hunters of all species live and lurk in these dark jungles, carving out a life for themselves in these still very primal lands. Because these gentle herbivores know nothing of borders and territories they wander The Meso freely, often wandering into Carno, Dromaeosaur or Tyrant country unknowingly.

Since the founding of these territories, the three packs have lived and died trying to claim a permanent place for themselves in The Meso. However, each is vastly aware of the fact that they are boxed in. Spike like mountains wrap around the Meso like a protective grip with cliffs and rises impossible to climb. To the east lies a massive sea filled with dark murky water which struggles to break and wave. What exists on the other side is unknown and without any real feasible way to cross it, there is no way of ever finding out.
The only possible exit into The Beyond is that of the southern desert. A sea all in it's own with towering golden dunes and scorching temperatures no one has ever managed to cross the great expanse. For many, the desert is a place of ghosts, curses and old taboos. To enter is sacrilege in the Carnotaur culture and for many others it's suicide.

The question still lingers however...
What lies beyond the eastern sea?
What hides in sea of scorching sand?
What really was the Great Calamity?
Most importantly however...

...what lies in The Beyond...?

Locations

Mesozoika Map 1.0 by PrimalInstincts

The Meso is a large expanse of land easily the size of one of the large Southeastern States (Like Colorado or Arizona). Wrapped on all sides by spiky, sharp mountains those inside are essentially trapped within. However the terrain is surprisingly rough inside the grip of the mountains and varies wildly from region to region.
Jungles to High Mountain Tundra and everything in between exist within The Meso providing plenty of biomes for the resident dinosaurs to settle into.

Packs

Packs are defined (in Mesozoika) as large collections of predators who have established territories. They live under some type of formal leadership with laws governing them and often have some sort of ranking system.

Packs of the Meso, currently, consist of:

Dromaeosaur Pack

Made up of not one but three species of feathered raptor, the Dromaeosaur's inhabit a high plateau to the west of The Heart. The climb up to their homeland is steep and prone to collapse making it perfect for the smaller hunters who live in secrecy. The climate on the mountain is similar to that of the Rocky Mountains. With dense pine trees and a colder than normal climate, the feathered hunters are probably some of the only dinosaurs suited for living in these mountains. With some rather harsh winters and frosty falls and springs, summer is often the only reprieve for the inhabitants.

Carnotaur Pack

With the largest territory under their claws, it's no surprise that the Carnotaur pack has the greatest biome diversity. The northern half of their lands is made up of cool temperate forest which slowly warms as you move south. The forest thins around The Vale before giving way to grassland which makes up most of the southern lands before being devoured by the desert. The western clan lives in a harsh, mountain like climate with little grass and more stone than anyone could ever care for. The eastern river clan lives in a much wetter environment surrounded by rivers, swamps and very lush land.
Possible the most intimidating feature in their territory and in the Meso itself is the large active volcano to the north. Generally very docile and quiet, it is prone to some angry grumbles from time to time and the spitting of ash.

Because of it's size, the entire eastern border of the Carno lands runs along The Heart. Seeing as these lands are unclaimed, the Carno's frequently face off against invading rogues who are unaware of the boundary line.

Tyrannosaur Pack

Self appointed Kings (and Queens) of The Meso, these large beasts have claimed most of the eastern lands for their own. Partial to ambushing their prey, the massive expanse of grasslands is perfect for them! With some spotty forest and more dense trees to the north and west the large hunk of land is divided into fourths and ruled over by a Noble. The entire eastern border is ocean front beach which alternates between sand, stony shore and cliffs. Because of the close proximity to such a large body of water, the Tyrants often experience lots of rainfall, storms and sometimes even small hurricanes.

Rogue's

Rogue dinosaurs are defined as any species of dinosaur that doesn't conform to an above packs and thus don't have a defined territory. Many herbivores have large, well established herds but until they pick out a slice of land for themselves they are still considered rogues. The same goes for unique carnivores who have yet to form into a pack.

Non-Dinosaur Inhabitants

While Mesozoika's dinosaurs are the power houses of the region, they are not the only creatures that live in the area! Small to Medium sized mammals along with birds and small reptiles exist in The Meso. Often seen as potential prey for up and coming hunters, some dinosaurs form bonds with these creatures and enjoy keeping them as companions or pets!

You can find a list of animals your dinosaur might encounter in their travels here: Non-Dinosaur Inhabitants

Predators

When you have to compete with such titans as a Tyrannosaurus or Spinosaurus it doesn't leave a lot of room for fair competition. Because of this, non-dinosaur predators have remained rather small and only threatening to hatchlings and some smaller Dromaeosaurs like Microraptors. Predators in The Meso consist of animals like:
Lizards (who enjoy eating eggs)
Snakes (Venomous species are rare)
Foxes
Predator birds (Hawks, Eagles, Falcons and Vultures)
Dire Wolves (Exclusive to Carno and Tyrant territory)
Short Faced Bears (Exclusive to Carno territory)

Predators are not good pets!
A general rule of thumb is a dinosaur can't have a predatory pet that is larger than itself. Even so, a larger predator who has a dangerous pet may not be welcome close to the pack or into social gatherings because of the danger.

Pets

The reasons for having a pet vary from pack to pack. Some just like having an added little friend while others may train their companions to assist in useful tasks. For larger predators who are interested in crafting or skilled work, having a dexterous friend is almost required for their craft!

Common Pets for Dromaeosaurs
  • Any type of bird! (Songbirds, Ravens, Crows, etc)
  • Mice
  • Squirrels
  • Rabbits
  • Ferrets or weasels
  • Hedgehogs
  • Rocks (His name is Clive okay >c)
  • Large insects (mostly by Microraptors)
Common Pets for Carno's
**Keep in mind, pets depend on region as well**
  • Medium to large non-carnivorous birds (Ravens, Crows)
    • Herons and fishing birds (Eastern Region)
    • Large lizards and nonvenomous snakes (Volcanic crag area and southern regions)
    • Parrots and large beaked birds (Jungle regions)
  • Hedgehogs (Forested regions)
  • Groundhogs (Southern Region)
  • Rabbits (If not eaten >.>)
  • Tropical frogs (Jungle Regions)
  • Microraptors

Common Pets for Tyrants
  • Medium to large non-carnivorous birds (Ravens, Crows)
  • Sometimes small song birds if they aren't made into snack
  • Snakes
  • Sea birds
  • Tropical frogs (Jungle regions)
  • Microraptors

For species not listed above:

Refer to the following list for anything not listed above in regards to pets. Some animals are harder to come by and even harder to make a pet after all!

  • Medium - Large Carnivores birds (Hawks, Falcons, Vultures, Owls) cost Ultra Amber

Things to keep in mind:

  • Remember, dangerous pets even those cared for by a larger hunter are seen as threats to hatchlings and the pack as a whole. Should your character manage to tame one, they may not be welcomed close to the main pack.
  • Medium to large pets should be discovered early in life. Raising a pet from a young age into adulthood helps form a stable bond.
  • If your character is planning on adopting a pet from a different region, keep in mind the climate they should be living in! A lizard or snake would not make a good pet for a Dromaeosaurs who live in the high mountains where its cold.
  • Not sure where a pet you want fits in? Just ask!
