This month I interviewed CeroGrey ! Cero is a photographer based in Mexico whose gallery is filled with great portraits, in multiple genres, including cosplay and, of course, fashion! I was immediately drawn to his atmospheric and colorful work, because of how much personality it has.
Enjoy!

What made you decide to photograph people? And were portraits the type of photography you first started out creating?
CeroGrey : I did not start with portraits but I really like to make them; I feel they are very expressive and I like to capture the details of everything about the faces especially the eyes. I love all kinds of portraits, especially mid shot and close up portraits because you can see the person's expressions better, and I feel they're more intense when conveying something.
Please, briefly describe your fashion photography style.
CeroGrey : I would say it would be a very fashionable style with a mixture of something casual.
Are you self-taught or formally educated in photography? And if you're self-taught, what resources have you found to be the most helpful on your journey?
CeroGrey : I took a basic photography course but from then on most of it I learned by myself, in the manner of learning from mistakes and learning to improve based on them.
Do you think in this age of technology that photography is "easier" or more "accessible?" And does this matter for the industry?
CeroGrey : Well, I do think photography is easier because even a smartphone can take pictures. It's also easier than before in terms of learning, since everything is digital and you can verify the parameters and correct them until you find what you are looking for in a photo.
What do you find most inspirational for your creativity?
CeroGrey : What inspires me the most is the place where the photos are taken, that gives me ideas for the postures and the angles I want to make for the photo.
Do you plan out your photo shoots extensively beforehand? Or are you a bit more spontaneous when creating a fashion series?
CeroGrey : During the photo sessions I like to prepare everything from location to clothing the model will use so they match with the idea that I have at that moment, so it would be easier at the moment of taking the photos. I've had to improvise sometimes but I prefer to have everything in order in advance.
What has been the most important piece of advice you've been given on photography? And what advice would you give to a fashion photographer trying to start out?
CeroGrey : Always value your work and try to learn from your mistakes, that is how you will learn more.
What is your favorite and/or most successful photo-shoot you've created?
CeroGrey : I would say the Catrin shoot I did last year, the concept was as I wanted and the one of the cosplay of Ririchiyo.
Putting together teams for photoshoots can be difficult, and many new photographers don't know where to start. How do you find people to work with? What kinds of qualities do you look for in a creative team?
CeroGrey : The people I usually hang out with actually met on a day that I was doing a photo session and made friends; I like to be with people who think the same way as me and who contribute ideas or concepts different from mine, that have a good vibe and that adore photography.
How do you connect with your models when they're in front of the camera? Do you do lots of model directing on photoshoots?
CeroGrey : If I regularly like to meet my models that they like or if they have an angle that they like, I like to make some jokes to relax the environment and try to get to know each other more, I usually say what positions to do to imitate them. I like that they contribute their ideas and from there we complement each other for the final photos.
What kind of goals are you currently working towards with your photography? Do you have any goals for 2019?
CeroGrey : I would like to do some photos in a studio in the coming months and explore new ideas with that, I would also love to do more boudoir photography and have more experience with that.
