[1KA] Yu FengMian

Personality: A cold, intense and somewhat paranoid man. Though the people who knew him would be the first to say that he's very knowledgeable in his chosen fields of study, they'd be even quicker to tell you that for all his intelligence, you could hardly call him a smart man; what he has in technical knowledge he lacks in the ability to use his common sense. If you're meeting him somewhere you should be prepared for a good ten minute wait or a hunt for him. He loses track of time, forgets to eat, stays silent for hours... saying he makes friends easily would be a blatant lie. If you were to get to know him better, you would find a man who's emotions run far from the surface. He can be called dedicated, perceptive and focused. Ever vigilant, he seems to sleep with one eye open.

He's prepared to put aside his personal feelings in order to work with someone in a professional matter and he actually seems to have a lot of patience for someone who doesn't share his knowledge of the subject at hand. To the few friends he's won he is considered reliable... in certain circumstances. He can certainly be relied upon to risk his own safety for a friend.

Difficult to read, his face can lean towards blank - or just grumpy looking.

His paranoia stems from the supernatural nature of his abilities; with spirits pushing on the other side of the veil, often attempting to hurt him, he is on edge. FengMian is used to hearing the dead scratch on the edge of the world of a living like fingertips on the underside of a coffin.

History: [Modern Urban Fantasy Setting] Fengmian was born with normal vision, but frosted over eyes - a symptom of a spiritually sensitive individual in his original world. Whilst not a common occurrence, it was known and was enough to single him out from his peers. Unusual eyes make for hesitation from classmates, and a guarded little boy.

During his summers he would live in the country with his grandmother, helping her tend her gardens and her farm. This further isolation led to the consumption of many types of books and he flourished academically if not socially. His grandmother's detective novels first gave him the idea of joining the police force, though his parents maintained that he would be able to be a doctor and encouraged him down that academic path. He took on extra classes when he was in school and extra work when he was not and became a sedate but solemn child, into things he shouldn't be. During his free time roaming around the countryside of his grandmother's village, he would experiment on the ghosts he found at old cemeteries in the hils. He briefly found a spirit of an old medium who was willing to teach him some techniques that were frowned upon in the modern day. He learned several things but out of fear of being discovered he left this spirit in the graveyard rather than take it with him as a spirit guardian and he has regretted this to this day. This may be why he hasn't bothered to take on a guardian in later life.

Between his extra classes for his supernatural abilities, and his advanced classes for his academic studies he often found himself apart from his peers and coupled with his naturally bookish nature and quietness, FengMian found it easier to rely on spirits for companionship than the living. For good when they were willing - sharing secrets, divination, and swapping favours, all standard medium practices - and for bad when he could force them - with orders and sealing arrays which led him to more necromantic arts. Whilst not technically illegal, these methods are heavily regulated and monitored due to their tendency to generate resentment in the spirits that they use; fostering rage in already violent spirits, and inciting anger in once peaceful spirits. This can lead to spiritual rifts that allow spirits to escape and possess or attack the living. Often starting their rampage with their necromancer.

As he grew he maintained his supernatural education alongside his mundane lessons and received tuition into standard medium talents. If he started looking into necromantic techniques before he began his training for them officially... Well the scratches on his hand that should remind him of the consequences of such techniques are quickly swamped by the scars from the bloodletting that it is part of its practice. Its during this time he begins to develop the paranoia. The feeling of being watched. After all, the spirits really have started to take notice now.

Rather than grow out of these dangerous practices, FengMian chose to legitimise them and entered into a career with the police - a common profession for a medium in a town where supernatural crimes are commonplace - he chose to join the police as a coroner, though his natural powers now licenced to be used under the supervision of a partner - AnRong - are undoubtedly a major part of his work. And if his partner isn't quite as diligent as perhaps he should be when it comes to how those powers are used, or which ones are used. .. Well they sure do close a lot of cases. However even a licenced necromancer is not out of danger and in fact the spirits that they so often have to deal with are already stewing in terror and resentment and are even more prone to latching onto their necromancers looking for revenge. They're easy to collect and tough to get rid of, and the necromancer must stay vigilant to the amount of strife he is causing as it can lead to;

Death: A spiritual rift. A crime scene already sloshing with magic and too many corpses to question lead to too much activity in one place. It allows the resentful spirits he had been surpressing and dodging to break through into the living world, attacking FengMian directly and severing his soul's connection to his body. They tore it apart from the inside out. He does not know what happened after that. They may have turned on his partner as well, or dispersed into the world to possess it attack others.

 

Skills: Laser focused - he can quickly study and absorb complicated academic topics, an exceptionally fast scan-reader who can retain, regurgitate, and implement large amounts of information with ease. He's difficult to distract and he usually finishes a task if he starts it.

Eidetic Memory - If he's read it, he can remember it. He's not as good with spoken information and forgets things like directions quite easily.

Encyclopedia - Once information is in his head, it's in. If it's something he's took the time to study, he's quite knowledgeable about it. Subjects he is knowledgeable on include: supernatural entities, wounds and pathology, geography and geology, anatomy, plants and plant matter, necromancy, mediumship.

Medical examiner - If you were to ask him what his degree says on it, he'd tell you he's a qualified medical examiner. Though he's more used to dead subjects he has extensive knowledge of anatomy, pathology, toxicology etc. Don't ask him to treat the living for anything more serious than a cold, probably, he's not had a living patient for a very long time.

Driving Licence - he can drive. Legally. Whether or not he should be allowed to do so alone....thats up for debate.

Paperwork - When you work for law enforcement..... There's a lot. And he can do it all. And not have a melt down.

Gardening - He's good with dead people, and thanks to his grandmother's teachings he's good at keeping plants alive and well.

Piano - Pushed into it by his parents, but his fingers are long and dexterous. He turned out very good at it

Firearms - though he's not certified to carry one in the field, nor is he encouraged, FengMian had the ability to operate firearms with some degree of skill. This is mostly hand guns etc.

Medium - Perhaps it would be more accurate to call him a necromancer, his frosted over eyes are a sign (in his original setting) that he is (under certain high-energy circumstances) able to see spirits and is able to connect to the world of the dead through communication arrays and séances. Through his misspent youth he's developed this into several ways to harrass the dead; summoning arrays, binding talismans and sigils, poppet bodies and enforced tasks. Through the use of his blood as a medium he can force spirits to do his bidding but once they are released from his control they're usually ready to punch him in the face. He cannot raise zombies etc, though he can force a spirit to inhabit a form for a short time - shadow forms or paper/cloth bodies can be used for a short time but don't last for very long at all. He is also knowledgeable on sealing and dealing with freed or dangerous spirits, though this would be considered a last resort.

Additional Notes: I know that his magic won't be useable in many settings and I'm actually really looking forward to having an opportunity for him to have to adapt to not having a skill that he has relied upon since he was an early teen. I think it could lead to some interesting situations especially since he's physically kind of useless! 

He found a particularly fond friend in the detective he was often paired with - an older man with whom he shared a brand of cigarettes and a similar love for sitting in silence and not being forced to carry on a conversation. Fengmian would regularly join his family for dinner.

RP Style: Try to stop me talking about headcanons; I love it. I love to draw. Will honestly RP most ways, I'm just happy to be included. Literate RP would be my first preference but I'll go as long or short a style as is appropriate, super flexible!
