They made their way towards the tree, picking their way over rubble and vines that lay across the floor. Wine found herself unable to keep her hands from fidgeting, her eyes studiously averted away from the tall elvhen figure that was Cael. Her excitement at his sudden appearance was quickly overshadowed by a sudden dubious feeling. Why had he shown up here, of all places, and in the middle of what was supposed to be their test to prove themselves? Had he come on his own, or has his parents asked him to watch them, certain they would fail?
Most of her companions seemed in an equal mind as her; Samsara’s eyes were narrowed and trained on the back of the elvhen prince’s head, while Sern seemed to be muttering under breath and darting glances at Cael when he wasn’t looking. Ainwin did not seem to be phased, however. She walked with interested purpose, seemingly oblivious to the royalty in th WW : Ch XIV"Once was lost, but now am found.”
It wasn’t so bad, traveling by horseback. The further they got from the lush greens of the Atmora, the more coastal the road began to look. Pebbles and rocks began to crop up, and the Aegis Sea’s song could be heard when all was quiet. They stopped every so often to allow their horses to feed, not wanting to run them ragged. The journey, by Sern’s calculations, was only supposed to be about three days east, and then they would see a wooden hut that should not be there. When Wine asked what he meant, he just shrugged.
“Those are just the instructions I found, I’ve no idea if there’s another meaning to it. Let’s just hope it sticks out like a sore thumb.”
On their second evening in the plains, they made camp closer to the shoreline, outcropping rocks providing shelter from the wind. It made them feel smaller than they liked, and the camp felt denser. Wine wondered if this hermit would truly be WW : Ch XII"Share our similarities, celebrate our differences."
They spent the next few days exploring the city, learning what they could of their hosts in the hope that it would help prepare them for whatever may come next. They spent the days on their own devices, meeting up in the evening for dinner and to go over what they had gathered.
Sern spent a vast deal of his time pouring through books in their expansive library, missing his own extensive collection back home. The librarian had treated Sern with slight apprehension until he had mentioned his own library back home, from which a deep conversation on the old arts spawned.
Samsara could be seen in and out of the shops, satchels of herbs and alchemic supplies slung around her hips as she chatted with the healers. She was seen prowling around the forge as well, where Freega was working. She seemed to be trying to coax her into something, but Wine never asked what.
Ainwin spent a most of her time on the royal grounds, practicing archer
