Quests


A Tale of Tails doesn't use currency but in its place we have a fun little system called Questing, where you can earn extra perks for involving your dog in them. Rewards for succeeding a quest can result in rare exotic pets, character slots, breeding rights and future involvement for bigger group based plots, plus badges. Quests are provided by the Sniff Master's Guild, a union of Caninekind devoted to the art of sniffing and tracking.

There are many faces and places to see on Potcake Island and as such plenty of stuff for your character to do. Every three months the main 'big' quest will change, however, there are always smaller ones for you to partake in that will randomly be shuffled about depending on how often players use them or if some are thrown into the suggestions box for future. Some quests will be restricted depending on what divergent paths your character took or your dog's level as a Sniff Master, partaking in these quests is also a good way to earn a spot in bigger group related plots. 

You can either do these quests alone or you can bring friends, the more the merrier after all. The journey is always more fun than the destination. Your character can only take one quest at a time, so pick what you'd like to do wisely! When you select a quest, admins will roll a dice determining what you will encounter on your journey to success or even failure, your choices will determine what will become of your character and its party. Your Sniff Master level will help determine should you reach victory or a failure. Some quests have multiple parts or 'chapters' as they are called. How to Quest
  • Images and Literature MUST involve your dog interacting with the quest in some way.
  • Full Images consist of a fully colored drawing with a background. Shading is optional
  • Written Pieces consist of approx 500-700 words. This does not count roleplay threads.
  • Your dog is at least a teenager in order to begin a quest.
  • You can bring up to 3 dogs on your quest should you want to, these can be your dogs or someone else's.
  • You have to be in the Sniff Master Guild.

Sniff Masters Guild



Sniff Masters are dogs who have achieved the highest skill possible at tracking and identifying smells. They say a dog is measured by how good his nose is, and on Potcake a dog's sense of smell is a big deal around these parts. Legends have been passed down about how divine a nose the Goddess had, and many others followed into history as Sniff Masters. A Sniff Master is someone who has a sense of smell so powerful some believe you can sniff out the spirits… or at least you'll find the trail faster than that guy over there. Your character can start training to become a Sniff Master when they are a teenager, puppies are exempt from joining the guild and doing quests. In order to “master” your sniffing prowess, your character should be shown RPing/or drawing them practicing it. If it's a RP, there should be at least five posts relating to using its sniffing skills to improve. You can switch and swap between art or RPs to get your mastery number. Some quests are locked behind a Sniff Master level, Dungeons are also influenced by your skillfulness, as the lower your level the more likely it will be your character don't gain entry to the dungeon or fall to its random events. 

  • Skill level - There are tiers in how good your character will get with its level up. Becoming a Master is achieved through drawing and RPing about your character using/training its nose to track something. It doesn't have to be a training exclusive event, just shows your dog doing its sniffing in anyway at least 5 posts in RPs. There will be specific Sniff Master events that will temporary bestow bonus points to your training. Some quests will award you with free bonuses too. All character start with no level and only get their first Apprentice rank after completing the requirements.

Quest Board


In search of a quest? Seek no more, friend. This is the Quest Board, the bulletin to head to whenever you are need of something to do. It is organized by village and severity level, listing the details of the quest and what threats you might encounter on your journey to completing it. Depending on your Sniff Master level, it'll determine if the dice roll lets you continue on your quest or you fail. The higher your level, the better your RNG shall be. You can also combine forces with other Sniff Masters but be warned, the level of your party can affect you in both good and bad ways. Should you fail, you still need to show the details of how it lead to said failure, only then can you try a quest again after the 'cool down' period.

Sniff Master Dungeons


Alongside the specified quests on the bulletin, you can also have random encounters within a dungeon. Dungeons were built by Sniff Masters of old all over Potcake, they are filled with mysterious creatures and artifacts, both treacherous and inspiring. Meant to test the keen wit and nose of a Caninekind, do not take a dungeon lightly. Some are buried deep beneath the earth in temples and caves, others intwined creatively within the forests and mountains above ground. These are determined by a dice roller. You are allowed to request an encounter roll if you wish, when asking for one, we would roll to see if your character finds the entrance to the dungeon at all. The better your Sniff Master Level, the more likely you will gain entry to the dungeon. You can ask which one you'd like to explore, though be careful, some are more dangerous than others. [EX. Buttercup Beach, Devilsclaw Maw, Twayblade Mines, Spikenard Bluffs, etc] You are allowed to bring a friend like you would a quest, being a limit of three however. Once you are given your event, there will be two further parts to respond to in order to complete the dungeon and earn a handsome prize [which will be 2 randomly rolled craftable items, such as a weapon, a food, perhaps pet tokens, etc!]. You can choose to RP, write, draw, etc, anything you like.

Dungeons of Potcake Island



Goldenstar Valley


  • Buttonwillow Dungeon - Buried deep in the heart of the woods lays a temple shrouded in aging gray stone and covered in moss and vines. The entrance is blocked off by large boulders and gnarling roots. However, once inside, it leads deep into the earth. Stone walls embrace you from all sides, ancient inscriptions etched into its halls. There are natural springs and streams inside, as well as vines blocking off passageways that need to be cut through. Be careful, the farther you go, the more the floor gives way to nothingness. 

  • Shootingstar Dungeon - The small slither in the stone work near the cliff leads into Shootingstar Ridge’s Dungeon, cloaked in shadows and thick foliage and stone. The dungeon itself is swathed in darkness, even candles and lanterns don’t burn bright enough to light a path through its maze. It seems Sniff Masters of old etched a kind of map in the ceiling that faintly radiates a strange glow in scattered specks… a map, perhaps? One’s nose is their best tool here, even if most of the area smells of wet rocks and moisture… does starlight have a scent too?

  • Starlily Dungeon -  Inspired by star charts, it is said that the interior of this dungeon reflects that of Canis Major the Greater Dog. It has beautiful stoney walls that glisten from some unknown ore, making it seem as if it is made from starlight itself. Many of its pathways are surrounded by water channels that follow at the sides, including waterfalls that pour from the ceiling into the endless abyss below.

Wormwood Forest


  • Falconherb Dungeon - Amongst the mist and ruins is Falconherb Wetlands’ Dungeon. Its smack dab in the wide open, uncommon compared to the others either located deep underground or carved into the surface of stone and mountain. Navigating the fog is a challenge, some rumor that you must follow the embers of torch light to get through it, else you could be lost forever. A Sniff Master should depend on their nose, a strange scent wafts through the swamp here. Becareful of monsters and sinkholes, as well as illusions that warp the mind and soul…
  • Bloodroot Dungeon - Eventually when one goes deep enough within the caves, they’ll find Bloodroot Dungeon. Or more so… it will find you. There is a strange whisper to these stone caverns that call Sniff Masters and explorers alike down here. The markings written in red on the caves are a language now long dead. You might squint and hope its not blood, its creepy enough as it is down here. Monsters known as a Blanther are known to lurk here, feeding on stragglers not smart enough to out sniff the blind feline/bat-like beast. It gives off a strange wailing sound that reminds others of a woman in distress.
  • Wakerrobin Dungeon - Nearly drowning is a great way to find this place, no really, if you want entry into the dungeon you have to let the river pull you down into its depths. Sniff Masters of old must have had a scary sense of humor when they thought of this way inside. There is a whirlpool that pulls Caninekind inside, leading towards an underwater cave.

Loot and Rewards


Doing quests and generally getting involved with the group with roleplays and artwork will reward you with loot. Loot is determined by a dice roller so you might not ever really know what you will get. Quests will always guarantee the prize you see advertised, so another good reason to try getting into them.

"What influences loot?"
Loot is entirely based on RNG from a dice roller, so its entirely random what you will get. However, you can use items crafted or earned to double the amount of awards you can get. 

"How do I get my loot?"
In order to claim your loot, you will post in this journal below what you are asking us to roll for. After you get your roll, we will add your new items to the group log's inventory [and please, you also do the same for your application info for the sake of cross referencing and fact checking, we are only human!]

Below is a list of loot you can earn with roleplays, artwork, writing and questing. If you want to keep track of your items and get to crafting out of your loot, you can find the Crafting Station HERE.

  1. Lumber - These come from chopped down trees or discarded branches and old logs, can be used to craft weaponry as well when combined with ore
  2. Mineral Stone - Commonly found from broken clumps of solid rock and stone, you can use this to craft weaponry when combined with ore and lumber.
  3. Copper Ore -

  8. Strange Key - an event based item, you have a chance of finding one of these to unlock treasure or a secret area
  9. Ricecake - the iconic dish of Potcake island, congealed rice and peas at the bottom of a cooking pot, use this to earn bonus Sniff Master Points. Can only be used once
  10. Uncooked Rice - its not cooked yet and so would be hard on the teeth to chew now, use uncooked rice and peas to craft Ricecake, you need three pouches of it to make the meal
  11. Raw Peapod - they could very well still taste good like this but you're better off basking them in butter, use peas and uncooked rice to make Ricecake, you need two pods of raw peas to make the meal.
  12. Red Rose - Whilst the red rose may be cliché, it’s become this way for a reason. It resembles true love, can be used to craft special items
  13. White Rose - White roses represent purity. But not many people know that when paired with the red rose, the meaning changes for both aesthetic flowers to signify unity, can be used to craft special items
  14. Forget-Me-Not - True and undying love is what we like to think of when we think of wedding celebrations. This is what makes the forget-me-not flower ideal for your special day as they stand for that exact virtue, can be used to craft special items
  15. Lavender - Devotion is a common meaning of the Lavender flower, and with its calming scent and gorgeous purple hue, it is a wonderful choice to add a splash of color, can be used to craft special items
  16. Calla Lily - These angelic flowers symbolize amazing beauty, and are associated with holiness, faith and purity. They are often featured in cascading bouquets to emit a graceful and spirited arrangement, can be used to craft special items.
  17. White Grapes - Their name is really misleading when in reality they are more of a green color, has a slight bitter taste but far from unpleasant.
  18. Red Grapes - Sweet and juicy, these red grapes are always a tasty treat to have around the house.

  22. Sugarcane - This cane is commonly used in baking sweets or aging fine wines to perfection, combine it with other fruits and such to see what you might cook!
  23. Soft Feathers - These feathers are super soft to the touch, perhaps you can find some use for them?
  24. Thick Stick - Not really made for attacking things but you could surely knock someone out if you hit them hard enough with it. Quests that involve possible enemy threats reduce the chance of loss with this item by 5%. Otherwise, its a good base to make a weapon or tool with.
