Dear members,

I hope you're all doing well and are able to stay safe during these times. As many of you expressed this would be a good time for a contest, despite what is going on in the world, here we are! Please carefully read this journal in order to understand the prompt and rules!

The Prompt

Most of us were inspired by the world's masterpieces and master artists at some point during our artistic journey. Some of us even recreated some of these masterpieces to help us learn and grow as artists. Artists like Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Vermeer, Rembrandt, have all made immense contributions to the world of art that can still be felt today.

For this contest, I'm asking you to pick a masterpiece from any of the following time periods: Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Pre-Raphaelite, Impressionism, Post-impressionism, Expressionism or Surrealism.

:police: Yes, I am excluding some art periods, such as: ancient art, medieval art, symbolism, cubism, abstract art, dada, fauvism, art deco, pop art and anything else that wasn't named in the list above.

Once you've picked your famous masterpiece, it's time for you to recreate it, in your own style, adding twists and making changes to it as you see fit.

:star: All art mediums are accepted, you could choose to write a poem based on a painting, create a painting based on a sculpture, recreate the necklace worn in a famous portrait, create a modern version of a renaissance gown, photograph a baroque still life, etc etc.

It should be clear that your entry was inspired by the masterpiece you chose, BUT that does not mean you should just copy it. Put your own twist to it, add your style to it, change some elements about it to make it your own unique piece.

:police: Again, to make it clear DO NOT just create a perfect copy of the masterpiece ;) The inspiration section below can help you see what I mean.

The Rules

  • You may create a maximum of 2 entries for this contest
  • Your entry/entries must be NEW, created specifically for this contest, and therefore posted after this journal went up
  • You must pick a masterpiece from one of the periods listed above (for example you cannot pick a Picasso piece, as it's from the cubism period)
  • The description of your deviation(s) must include a link to the masterpiece artwork you were inspired by
  • The description of your deviation(s) must also include that it is/they are an entry for projecteducate's The Masterpieces contest (link this journal)
  • You cannot just trace/copy the masterpiece artwork, as indicated above, add your own twist to it, have fun with it! (it can be a close reproduction if you want, but should still have your unique style to it)
  • Enter the contest by linking your entry/entries in the comment section of this journal
