What is an Asaro Head?
An artist's mannequin depicting the simplified planes of the head. A wonderful reference tool for art students learning to paint and draw portraits. It was designed by John Asaro in the 1970's.
Guide
- Save the Asaro Head Reference i.imgur.com/eAZN5sg.jpg
- Choose a head. (I'm working left to right.)
- (Alternatively, go to sketchfab and pick your own angle.)
- Set a timer. Give yourself anywhere from 10-30 mins per head.
- (30 mins is recommended for beginners.)
- Start your drawing using Loomis or any other method you like.
- Do: Be engaged. Try to understand how the planes are working together.
- Don't: Try to make a perfect exact copy of the reference.
- It's up to you if you want to focus on just the lines, shading or both.
A special “Thank You” goes to Spacedad from Twitch and Ethan Becker's Discord. They have free classes and streams covering various art topics. Today's study was a result of drawing along with the class. If you want to see that stream I'll leave the link here
