Fall brings to mind festivity. A time of plenty, the harvest season.
Everyone is busy getting ready for winter. It's the traditional time for county fairs and other fall festivals.
My favorite thing about the fair is the arts and crafts.
Walking down the rows of tables that were covered in ribbon embroidery, stain-glass sun catchers, shining jewelry, and all the ceramics and pottery.
But of course what I was really looking forward to, as any seven year old really would, was making one of those “sand sculptures”. You know, where you get a baby food jar and pour layers of multicolored sand, then poke it with a wire to disrupt the sand into spikes and swirls.
By the time you got back to the car at the end of the day the sand was so shaken up that it had returned to a muddy brown color.
But I digress.
The fall season is rich in color and flavor, between the cooling temperatures and the pleasant company that these social events bring, I am inspired to try my hand at knitting, jewelry making, and other sorts of “crafting”.
I bring to you today some amazing examples of the sort of Traditional Arts that could have been found at fall festivals many years ago. And also some other amazing examples of the arts that were born of those traditions and have become popular and progressive categories of creative outlet in their own right.
