What's Up?

Bulba Gift

Things like Secret Santa and wonderful contests are springing up everywhere, with December rolling in along with the world's favorite holiday, Christmas. Its sure the busiest time of year, so get ready, crack your knuckles, and brace yourself for a long to-do list.

Not too long ago, our own group set up a rather small "Bulba Gift" event--Our own Pokemon spin-off of Secret Santa. Already there have been wonderful submissions-- Check these beauties out!

We're all excited to see what else will be made, and hoping that in the future, we'll be able to hold more Bulba Gift events.

The Bulba Bot

This brings us to our next topic for "What's Up". Between Pikana-Chuster and yours truly, whitty-boo, we have set up a "bot account" that will help collect point donations that will contribute to group contests and helping out fellow members in need. We want to help our members expand their audience by selling favorites, watches, featuring them, and more.

For a limited time only, any member of Bulba-Journal that donates 20 :points: or more will be given a free colored chibi sketch from our founder, whitty-boo. All that donate will be featured in future Bulba Journal Issues.

Also, this bot will be selling Favorites that will serve as a Feature Gallery. Any deviant can buy a Favorite from this bot for only 2:points: per favorite! And likewise, any deviant can buy a watch from this bot that will set your icon as a "Friend" and feature you for only 8 :points:. The Bulba Bot will receive any of your Journals, Polls, and deviations.

Our goal is to reach 1200 :points:, which will serve as contest prizes in our future contest in the beginning of 2011.

So, if you want to help us out and support us, please give a visit to our new Bulba Bot, :iconbulbajournal:

Member of the Month

The November 2010 Member of the Month goes to...

:pokeball::icontemerain::icontemerain::icontemerain::icontemerain::icontemerain::icontemerain::pokeball:

Temerain was suggested by Pikana-Chuster, who will recieve a feature at the end of this engaging interview with the deviant who draws such realistic beasts and pokemon!

  • Hello there! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

    • Well,  I'm a free lance illustrator from the UK who is currently studying for a illustration degree at Northbrook University.
    • Oh, that's wonderful! It's nice to see someone pursuing a career in art. How long have you been a Pokemon fan?

      • Since it first arrived on the UK shores; I was about 10 at the time and I was hooked ever since.
    • I'm sure you aren't the only one! Are you self-taught or did you take art lessons?

      • I am self taught in Photoshop, though I took traditional lessons at college and school.
    • Self taught? I find it amazing! So then, how long have you been drawing?

      • Ever since I was able to pick up a pencil, though i never took it very seriously until college when I realized I could actually make a living out of it. Still, no one saw my photoshop images until university, which is strange as they are now my most well known pieces.
    • Wow, that's a lifetime of art experience. Your self taught talent makes more sense to me now. What do you like to draw the most?

      • Oh..that tends to change with my mood at this particular moment. It's pokemon as I am geekily excited for Pokemon Black and White, but animals , my comic critters and fantasy creature pictures are always in the back of my mind.
    • I can't wait for it either. Its almost a phenomenon! And speaking of that, what is your favorite Pokemon related art work you've ever done, and why?

      • Ohh difficult... I like "London Pigeons" as it's what i would consider a finished image (background and everything), but my "Future Pokemon B/W Team" will always be my favorite, just as it was so much fun to figure out what my team will be.(Though i am currently drawing a picture with all the eevee evolutions which might become my fav when its done)
    • Wow, they are all magnificent and well done! With talent like this, do you plan on doing anything with your art in the future?

      • I am currently trying to make a children's book and a small art book which will contain British mythical creatures, so keep an eye out for those.
    • Will do! Any shout-outs to your fellow readers?

      • Any else very excited about Pokemon Black and White !! Choosing which starter to go for was such a huge challenge.

After the interview, I hurried and checked out what deviations she was talking about. They are wonderful, so I will feature them here:

Not only was this adorable, but the soft vibe of the brush strokes and the simplicity gave me nostalgia of a childhood filled with trick-or-treating, dressing up, and best of all, carving pumpkins and watching them glow. It was the best to represent our Halloween theme.

Whispers

Hey guys, November is known as the month of souls, so I’m going to dedicate it to an amazing aspiration to the Pokemon world. If you want all the usual gossip of Pokemon, check out Serbii.net because they’re awesome.

Serious face on. Takeshi Shudo, the original creator of the Pokemon anime, was pronounced dead on the 29th of October from a subarachnoid hemorrhage in his head. At 61 years of age, he collapsed at Nara railway station's smoking area around 6:00am on Thursday, October 28th. Upon being discovered by a passerby, he was rushed to the hospital and is undergoing surgery.

Shudō was a key part of the initial stages of the anime's original series. He wrote the first episode, which aired over ten years ago, and was a scriptwriter for the first three movies and the Mewtwo Returns TV special. His most recent Pokémon work was in 2003, writing the screenplay for the 244th episode of the anime, Yadon's Comprehension! Satoshi's Comprehension! (Enlighten Up!).

May Mr. Shudo rest in peace.

Blahs from Bulbaseer

by mysticmuffindragon

So, I have this really cool Pokeball wristband that I wear absolutely everyday. No lie. And it seems like everyday someone new notices it and I always get smiles or compliments on it. Except I know the majority of them only really know the original 151 or perhaps 2nd generation.

Then at some point this weekend, a friend of mine mentioned that they had mentioned something about Pokemon Red/Blue to a younger kid and they had absolutely no idea what they were talking about. I was absolutely in awe. Have we finally reached the day when the newer generation of Pokemon fans only know the most recent generation and have no recollection of the AMAZING past? Have we gotten to the point in the line when the newer fans only like the new Pokemon because of all the bling bling and crazy palette swaps and think the older and original generations are lame?

It saddens me to think that we have reached this point...I suppose it's because I have this lasting relationship with Pokemon because I've been with it from the beginning; whereas, the younger fans are pretty much spoon fed everything, which isn't necessarily bad, they don't know any better. I just don't want them to kick my wonderful originals to the curb! As I'm sure you all understand. We should not discard our origins to embrace our present! NEVAR FORGET.

Okay, I'm done.

Shipping Corner

by Pikana-Chuster

I never really supported a in-game shipping before because the personalities are really hard to decipher, but if there’s one shipping that stands out to me in Heart Gold/ Soul Silver, it’s Soulsilvershipping. Soulsilvershipping is the name for the shipping between the rival of the HGSS Pokemon games (named Silver due his manga counterpart in this journal) and the heroine (named Soul not to get her confused with her anime counterpart Lyra). The anime counterpart of this shipping is Shatteredshipping which is a relationship between Paul/Lyra. It should be noted that while Paul and Silver don’t look the same, their battling styles, attitudes and personalities match up pretty well.

I think that they completly match with each other, they have some things in common but they're so different at the same time. Lyra seems like a happy person while Silver seems a bit sad as we can see in the attiudes of the character (main or not). The heroine loves her pokémon, rival thinks friendship between pokémon and humans doesn't exist but in the end she can convice him to love his pokémon or at least take better care of them. I think that it's cool they added the Celebi Event, it's nice to know Silver's background and why is Lyra chosen to be the one to see it? Even if your main character is Ethan, she still sees it, maybe that's a little hint, perhaps?

Of course, fangirls like myself may like the romantic aspects, but the nosebleeds are also a factor. There is a slightly more perverted side of it... Oh Silver, we all know you're a perv (Radio Tower stripping event anyone?). Well, half of us are too. There’s also a humorous aspect of it. Their interactions in the game are funny as well as adorable. So many jokes have been made about the Radio Tower alone.

The more solid aspect behind Soulsilvershipping is that it was originally rumoured to have different dialogues according to your character’s gender. Most english reading fans died of happiness when they heard that the Japanese version had more romantic aspects if you chose the female. This was deemed false by the way! XP

And that’s all for my favorite game shipping ever !

Inside the Bulb

MALFUNCTION

"Went out to lunch. Won't be back until after the meeting. Love, Ryn.

ps. I didn't do it."

Whit looked at the note and sighed. Setting it down on the meeting room table where she found it, she snorted loudly and slumped into her seat, crossing her arms and almost curling up into her large winter coat. Soph, shivering as she walked in, furrowed her eyebrows and looked at her best friend.

"What is it here, indoor North Pole?" She chattered, rubbing her arms wildly. "My breath is so foggy, its like I'm smoking! Look!"

As Soph let out a few breaths for demonstration, Whit frown and thinned her eyes.

"I know, I know, but the heater is broken, and I'm so broke I can't get it fixed," Whit uttered. Soph let out half a laugh sarcastically.

"World's worst Founder." She smirked, and upon seeing Whit's frown, muttered a "Oh stop it, you know I'm kidding."

"Whatever. I set up the Bulba Bot a few days ago, so hopefully we can get the heater fixed with the money we collect," Whit let out a weak smile.

"You don't seem too happy about it."

"Oh, I'm ecstatic, but my cheeks are so numb, this is as big as my smile will get."

Soph chuckled and took a seat beside her pal. Whit, turning herself to face her Co-founder, sighed lightly and watched her foggy breath escape her lips. Before she could comment on it, a loud boom startled the two, causing them to bolt out of the meeting room. Kenny and Haley, the two Contributors, were storming through the hallway, shouting at Whit and Soph to run. Confused, the two girls kept jogging forward, following the destruction and commotion.

"What's going on?" Whit shouted, almost hyperventilating at the destruction of the Bulba-Journal Headquarters. Haley skidded to a stop, panting.

"The Bulba Bot!" she pointed down the hallway. Whit and Soph quickly picked up their pace until they reached the Admin Lounge, where the true damage was done.

A robotic Bulbasaur was on a rampage, red eyes shooting laser beams at the awful decor. Whit's jaw almost dropped to her knees, Soph acting quick and pulling out her Ultra Ball.

"Go, Hotaru!" Soph sent the Houndour out with a flick of her wrist. The fire canine braced himself against the artificial Pokemon, dodging a few laser beams while advancing forward. He shot a fire ball from his snout, which hit dead on, but only made the Pokemon madder.

"I don't think it's working!" Soph growled, watching her partner Pokemon get rammed into a wall. Whit, chewing her nails, didn't know what to answer her friend as she watched on.

"Here! Take this!" a voice entered through the back door, Pikana following in tow. She jumped over the rubble at her feet and headed towards Whit and Soph, a remote control in her hand. Whit held her hands up, cuing Pikana to throw it over, and thus the Co-founder hurled the item with all her might.

Clonk!

Whit was out cold the moment the remote hit her forehead. Pikana, wincing at her inaccuracy, yelled her apologies with guilt as Soph compromised and picked up the remote, pointing it at the Bulba Bot. She pressed the giant button at the top: the big, red button. This made her grin from ear to ear, for she liked big, red buttons.

The Bulba Bot, about to chop at Hotaru, flopped over and became lifeless. There was a moment of silence before it combusted into flames, crackling loudly like a bonfire. Soph sighed and nudged Whit awake, Pikana jogging over to help pick up her boss.

"What happened?" Whit rubbed her forehead. The other two girls looked at each other and pointed at the dead Bulba Bot at the same time. Whit, a large frown on, sniffed sadly, sighing at the destruction of her creation.

"Well... there goes that," she finally muttered, walking over to sit near the robot. She gestured for the other two to come join her, all three facing their palms and the large fire and smiling.

"Hey, Whit," Soph finally laughed. "The bot got us our heating after all."
